1st-grade students studied the art of El Greco, specifically his painting, View of Toledo (shown below). They each mixed different values of blue to create their blue sky background and created grass showing texture. Finally, after creating small houses for their scene they collaged all their pieces together to make their own original view of Toledo.

Students critiqued and analyzed the work of contemporary artist Jean Paul Basquiat specifically the way he combines text and images to formulate his thoughts. The student compared and contrasted the work of Basquiat and rapper Macklemore using an interview with the rapper and the song lyrics. Students created a portrait using words and images that represent their daily thoughts and made decisions on word placement and color choices. 3rd Graders studied optical illusions, positive/negative space and MC Escher as inspiration for this project. Students used iPads to photograph each other's faces in profile. They edited these photos to create an original face/vase using the Superimpose app. Next, they traced and cut out their profile on foam and printed it on paper with printmaking ink. Finally, they added objects that symbolize something important to them in the vase.
