3rd-grade students learned about the Japanese artist, Katsushika Hokusai specifically his painting The Great Wave off Kanagawa. Students used their knowledge of gesture drawing, figure drawing, and balance to sketch out surfer poses. Together we drew a "great wave" and the students added surfers in realistic poses and creative details surrounding their surfers. Finally using oil pastel and watercolor techniques students colored their work.

In Kindergarten students learned about illustration and looked at popular books and the illustrators who worked on them. Students tried to guess the book by the illustrator's style. Then each student chose their favorite book and a small picture that they felt represented that book. Finally, each student drew a book and "illustrated" the cover. They then created a self-portrait and collaged the book cover on top. To see more student work click here. See some of the illustrators we discussed below. Fifth grade students learned about a group of contemporary ceramicists and current ceramic tends. We looked closely at the artist Carrianne Hendrickson, shown above. Student started their piece with a pinch then using the slip and score method added features and textures to turn their pot into an animal of their choice. CLICK HERE to see more student work. |
